Okay, so you want to RP. First! Let's define what exactly 'roleplaying' is.
'Roleplaying', broken down, becomes 'Playing a role.'
When somebody acts in a play, they are roleplaying. Actors on the screen are playing a role, and therefore, are roleplaying. Whenever you're 'pretending' to be something or someone other than who we are, we are roleplaying! To roleplay is to express your creativity through a character, and so.. first.. you need to create a character to express yourself through, right?! So, let's start!
First, you need the basics;
Name; Remember that your characters name can affect how others see them. A name that makes sense is important. Avoid 'titles' unless you can reasonably explain them, and numbers are a definate nono, unless there is a reason! If you can't imagine your character introducing themselves with the name you give them, then think up something else! Gender; Ooh, this one's obvious. Is your character a girl or a boy? ;Genderless'? Hermaphrodite? Age; How old is your character? A kid, an elderly person? Teenager? Personality; Now, you'd expect this to come later, but it is important that you have a vague idea how how your character behaves. Are they mean, nice, friendly, whorish, short tempered, forever-tolerant? You don't need to think too deeply into it, but a basic attitude ideas are important! It'll help you pick your characters purpose/focus; for example, if your character is nervous or shy, they're not going to make a very good bouncer/assassin. On the same note, a bold, aggressive character won't make a very good librarian or child-carer.
Basic Development; Well, withmost of that decided.. the very basics, we need to figure out 'who' your character is. How would he respond to different situations? Why do they behave how they do? What motivates them? The best way to decide these things, is to give your character a history. Lets start off with some basic things you should include..
• Where did your character grow up? • Who were they raised by? Are their family still alive? What are they doing now? • How old is your character? • Have they travelled a lot? What unique or important experiences have they ..experienced in their life? • Have they ever been in love? Married? Heartbroken? Severely injured? Attacked, mugged, raped? • How did they come to be where they are now? Have they lived there all their lives? Moved there recently? Why did they move, or are they just visiting? • Are they wealthy? How did they come across their fortune? Inheritance? Lottery? Hard work?
Remember, there are hundred of other situations and questions you could add to this list, but don't worry about everything right this minute! You can work on them later. Creating a character is a progressive and somewhat ongoing process. You should never be affraid to continually add or modify things within your characters history in the beginning stages, because the more you have, themoreyou have to work with in your RP.
Lets get physical;
