In the books, Hyena society and terminology is very limited, and so we have formulated our own. In the event thCat more information is made available in the books, it will be changed here.

Terminology

Hyenas exist in a matriarchal society, where females are dominant over males. Females are usually larger than males.

Position in the pack is determined by dominance challenges, varying from body language to actual physical fighting, usually ending in one member submitting and backing down. Death is uncommon, except for challenges to the clan leader.

Oba - Female clan leader. Absolute alpha figure throughout the clan.

Ori - Oba's chosen partner; this may or may not be a 'mate' bond. The *** is the male clan leader, second only to the Oba. Often a patient, affectionate alpha who almost acts as a 'father figure' to the clan.

*** - Any hyena challenging for the Oba's position, usually female

Baho (male) and Mahi (female) - Alphas who's duty is assisting other pack members to control their beasts during sex.

Asa - Any pack member who places protection over another. An Asa will answer challenges and take punishments on their protectee's behalf.
